Spartan Brew 2/17: Coach Izzo Stands Alone

Tom Izzo is the winningest coach in Big Ten history!

What else do we have brewing today?

🏀 Izzo stands alone
⚾️ Perfect start
💚 And much, much more

🔼 Izzo Stands Alone. Michigan State men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo now has more Big Ten wins than any other coach in the conference’s long history, as the No. 11 Spartans beat Illinois, 79-65, in Champaign on Saturday.

The win was the 354th of Izzo’s career, passing Indiana’s Bob Knight for the top spot.

🔼 Hot Start. Michigan State baseball went a perfect 4-0 on opening weekend in Cary, N.C., winning a doubleheader against Western Michigan on Friday and a doubleheader against Monmouth on Saturday.

The Spartans allowed a total of four runs across their four games in North Carolina.

🔼 Late Night Fight. No. 22 Michigan State women’s basketball gave No. 1 UCLA everything it could handle on Sunday night inside Pauley Pavilion, taking a lead into the final minute of the game before a late Bruins run gave them a 75-69 win over the Spartans.

Theryn Hallock scored 19 points to lead the Spartans, followed by Julia Ayrault (18) and Grace VanSlooten (16).

🔼 Georgia On Our Mind. Michigan State softball went 2-1 over the weekend at the Red & Black Showcase in Athens, Ga., picking up wins over Longwood and Western Carolina.

Jacey Schuler tied a freshman program record for single-game strikeouts with 12 against Longwood on Friday, matching Stefanie Noffsinger’s mark from 1995.

The Spartans were scheduled to play five games in Athens, but bad weather canceled the Saturday slate.

🔼 High Five. No. 6 Michigan State gymnastics earned its fifth victory over a ranked team on Saturday, winning 196.725-196.700 at No. 23 Nebraska.

Nikki Smith earned her third straight all-around title against the Huskers and fifth overall this season.

🔼 B1G Finale. Michigan State wrestling finished up its Big Ten regular season dual schedule over the weekend, dropping a pair of matchups to No. 12 Rutgers and No. 19 Michigan.

🔼 Half Dozen. Michigan State women’s tennis upped its win streak to six matches over the weekend, earning a 4-1 win over James Madison on Saturday and a full 7-0 sweep of Liberty on Sunday in Lynchburg, Va.

🔼 Record Falls. For the second time this season, Rachel Forsyth broke the Michigan State record in the 3,000m over the weekend, running the race in 8:53.50 at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

💚 ONE BIG THING

🔼 Owning His Development. “We have a great life here and its hard work, definitely, but it pays off when you’re winning games and having fun.”

Since transferring over the summer, Charlie Stramel has put in the work — both on his own and with our coaches — to keep developing. Now, he feels stronger than ever and a better hockey player because of it.
